“Father, is it my time to go to Earth yet?” asked the little snowflake. “Not yet, little one. But, very soon.”
The little snowflake contented herself by watching the place where she was destined to go. Her home was to be a coal field near a little town.
The people of the town used the coal to keep their homes warm during the winter months. She noticed that the people were very thankful for the blessings of their coal field. She also noticed that no matter how clean they tried to keep themselves, the coal dust always left a film of dirt upon whomever or whatever it touched.
The little snowflake wondered about this, and wished there was some way the people could have the warmth the coal offered without the black dust that accompanied that warmth.
She looked at the splendor of her home and watched her sisters getting ready for their journey to Earth.
Each one wore a different dress so beautiful that angels oftentimes stopped to watch them and marvel at their delicate and varied beauty.
She knew that the time when the Earth slept was the time for their journey. Each season had a special beauty all its own. Winter was the time for rest, but also the time for rejoicing in the lesson of purity which blanketed the land.
She thought how pure the coal field would be when first she and her sisters came to Earth. Surely there must be a way to have it always look like that. The more she thought about this, the more she wished to make her dream come true.
She remembered Father saying, “All things are possible if you have enough faith and enough love.” So, she decided to put all her energy into loving the piece of coal she was to touch … and then maybe, just maybe …
The time arrived for her journey. She and her sisters danced with joy and sang songs of thanksgiving all the while they floated to Earth. If you listen, you may be able to hear their songs as surely as you can see their beauty.
The little snowflake was so filled with love, there wasn’t any room even for thoughts. Then, she gently touched her piece of coal.
That moment something magic took place.
Her love transformed the piece of coal into a shining stone like the splendor of a diamond.
And so it went until the entire coal field was transformed into a field of diamond-like stones.
The people came to get coal for their fires and saw instead a field of shining stones.
They were amazed at the dazzling radiance. Even more wondrous was the discovery that the stones kept them warm. Just by holding or being near one small stone, they were continuously bathed in warmth.
People came from all over the Earth to get one of these marvelous stones.
Before long, cold lost its power to chill the children of Earth.
And so it was that one heart, ever so tiny, served to warm the entire Earth.
