Spelling Tests

“Spell out the correct answer to each question.”
“What is a story with a punch line?”
“J-0-K-E.”
“When you have no money, you are … ?”
“B-R-O-K-E.”
“What is the white of an egg?”
“Y-O-L-K.”

“No, that’s the yellow of an egg. The white of an egg is A-L-B-U-M-E-N. Albumen.”

“Let’s check your spelling ability.
How do you pronounce M-A-C-A-R-T-H-Y?”
“MacCarthy.”
“How do you pronounce M-A-C-K-E-N-Z-I-E?”
“MacKenzie.”
“How about M-A-C-D-O-N-A-L-D?”
“MacDonald.”
“How about M-A-C-H-I-N-E.”
“MacHine.”

“No … machine.”

“Let’s try another spelling test. First, we’ll arrange your hands.”
Have your volunteer place her left hand palm down on the table, and place her right hand crosswise on top.

You say, “Now what does this spell: W-I-N-G?” “Wing.”
“Say it three times, please.” “Wing, wing, wing.”

Pick up the right hand and hold it to your ear, as though answering the phone. In your best Elmer Fudd voice, say, “Hewwo.”
