FRIENDS Presque Isle State Park

Wonderful day filled with sun, laughter, and aching senior bones.
Raspberries are my favorite fruits, so it was a nice beginning to see Raspberry Street in Erie PA on our way to Presque Isle State Park. Here we enjoyed the Adventure Lab Walking Tour – The Shifting Sands of Presque Isle State Park. First we walked the Bay Side where we encountered waterfowl. Then we crossed over to the Lake Side where we certainly got our exercise walking over the shifting sands.

This Adventure is sponsored by Pennsylvania State Parks. Presque Isle State Park is one of the few places in Pennsylvania where you can see evidence of the recent geological past and watch geological processes in action. It is the only location in the state where waves break on extensive sandy beaches. The shoreline, the sheltered harbor behind the peninsula, and diverse habitats supporting unusual plant and animal communities all exist because of the lake-related processes moving sand over many years. Waves, currents, and wind moved sand, creating a series of dune ridges, ponds, and marshes. Presque Isle State Park is such a unique landform that it has been recognized as a National Natural Landmark to encourage conservation of this site and its outstanding biological and geological resources. During this 1.7-mile Adventure with 7 stops, walk or bike part of the peninsula while learning about the efforts to manage the natural resources of Presque Isle State Park. Beach walking is required.
