1. Roadside the rock is relatively smooth with some depressions holding water. Mountainside is irregular with large to small rocks visible.
2. The more resistant minerals stand out and are clearly visible within the less resistant rock.

My purpose with the BRP caches was to have cachers visit the overlooks and learn a bit along the way. You mentioned having coordinates at the overlooks and parking coordinates as waypoints. You can see the overlook directly across from the parking. For those in a wheelchair, they can remain in their vehicle and use binoculars to better observe the outcrop if they wish. Hence, the reason I chose to use overlook parking for the coordinates. I did not code this as a 1, because most will want to walk over and get a closer look. Actually, I had an elderly cacher (in his late 80s ), who loved the series as he was able to enjoy them with his limited physical ability.

1. Gravity … At 441.4 one boulder was separated from the parent rock due to erosion. At 302.4 this is a family of giants’ home territory -and- this is their ballfield.

The outcrop is across the road from the overlook. Mountain-building during the Paleozoic deformed the rock. This intense compression formed crenulations aka crinkles (horizontal lines) which are small, tight folds. These crinkles are generally less than one inch.

MY RESPONSE TO REVIEWER WANTING LANGUAGE EDITED BECAUSE IT IS IN CONFLICT WITH BEING OPTIONAL.
1. I carefully worded the optional tasks to be accurate. Since they are optional, they are in compliance with earthcache guidelines.
2. A and C are the only accurate indicators of an on-site visit. I personally witnessed the following scenarios: a. Heard a phone call asking for EC answers. Cacher logged the find without visiting the site. b. Saw one person at the site. She sent in answers for her group. Everyone logged the find without visiting the site. c. Another group all logged nearly a dozen earthcaches. Not everyone visited the sites as confirmed by a member of the group. Asked those with cut-and-paste logs to at least do B and C to verify they read the page and were on site. They responded with unkindness and contacted groundspeak. B and C were initially part of the logging requirements. Changed ALL my earthcaches to make them optional.
3. Only a very few respect the requirements that “Each cacher must send his/her own answers BEFORE logging a find.” I have to verify that ??? sent in the answers for them. Very time-consuming and frustrating. I send messages to either advise or thank based on answers and logs. I usually delete logs that have tftc or something similar with no answers sent. A (pic on-site) B (reading) C (personal on-site) are all optional and most do not do them.
4. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth the immense time and effort to find the site, get permission, do the research, prepare the cache page, submit for review, and as is the case with this series, do multiple re-writes and submissions. If only we could find these interesting places, require a picture to verify on-site visit, and one or two simple questions … but, alas, that is not the case.
NOTE: Reviewing other earthcaches shows the same sentiment worded in a variety of ways.

This outcrop gives an excellent view of large folds produced by deformation of the metagraywacke.
Large gentle folds indicating a relatively low degree of compression.

“The rock is a thin- to medium-layered, complexly folded biotite gneiss and biotite-hornblende gneiss with abundant quartz- and feldspar-rich layers showing curved banding.”
1. Back shows curved banding. Significant areas of staining appear on the front.
There is a single rock 13′ tall perched on the side of the mountain. On the backside, banding is evident. There is nothing surrounding it and no biological elements are present. There is an inclusion that is quite different from the parent rock.
2. Rock was much larger. Different forces acted on front and back causing the differences.
3. I believe this is both caused by differential erosion and transport by gravity.

5. Loblolly Pine – The twisted Loblolly Pine began growing when this site was open duneland. Ocean winds and salt spray prevented it from achieving the height and symmetry characteristic of this species in protected zones. It is called a “pioneer” because it was among the first to gain a foothold in the harsh environment, and because it helped to create conditions that enabled other species to become established.

7. Natural dunes are formed from very fine, windblown sand that accumulates around beach debris and other obstacles. Fast spreading grasses and other plants build up dunes by trapping sand as they grow.
8. Dune Shrubs – The primary dune provides protection from saltspray allowing beach grass and other plants to dominate this interdune area. Vegetation builds up organic matter in the soil and provides food and cover for many creatures.

It is no wonder that storms cause so much change when their power is unleashed on the land.

…I sought help from Matt Dawson, the GSA administrator of the EarthCache program. He looked at the other EarthCaches you developed in the area and was complimentary of the finished pages.
…He and I are both are both stuck trying to help you move this EarthCache to being published. His comments are:
“Task 1. This doesn’t work because it is not “unique” and essentially the same answers can be used for any mountain chain viewed in the distance. It is very generic and does not really teach any lesson. It can be answered without visiting.
Task 2. This does not teach any specific lesson. I do like “open ended” questions, but they work best when paired with something more specific. It does force one to make some observations, so that is good. But I always have issues with caches that are asking you to look off in the distance. It’s hard to have a lesson at such a distance, with a few exceptions (looking at the shape of a glacial valley, perhaps). So let’s look at 3…
Task 3. Gosh, this is still very general too.

It does what I’d expect a cache in that area to do, talks about the geology right there at the spot. …I think I don’t really see the point of the cache at Clingman’s Dome 3. #1 and #2 both look good to me, and #3 seems to be a “trophy high point” that doesn’t add much to the lessons of #1 and #2. The second one, on concretions, is also nice, specific, and geological, and localized. I like that one too. I can see why the cache owner might think adding another cache up at the high point might make sense, but I’m not seeing the geology or teaching yet to make it valid.”
…Mr. Dawson’s comments are pretty consistent with mine posted on 24 September. This EarthCache page content may need to be significantly curtailed and focused on features more readily observable from ground zero, regardless of the weather and air quality conditions. Alternatively, perhaps you could make this a wide-ranging multi-EarthCache with waypoints that take visitors “up close and personal” to the features you want them to observe from the viewing platform. Once the visitor has visited the various other sites and answered logging tasks associated with them, then they can visit the High Point for a final logging task that pulls everything together. This approach would be consistent with the concept of “a local observation that is related to the Earth Science lesson you are trying to teach” (italics added by me) being applied to multiple locations for the punch line of the Blue Ridge Parkway EarthCache series.

1. OUTCROPS … Regional deformation … a. Looks like a Tic-Tac-Toe grid. … b. Veins of white quartz crosscut the rock and blue quartz pebbles are embedded in the conglomerates.
NOTE: Thunderhead conglomerates … mostly near the beginning of the trail.
2. CONCRETIONS … Compact mass formed by the precipitation of mineral cement within the spaces between particles. / Calcium Carbonate Disk – calcium carbonate minerals weathered quicker than the other parts of the rock / 1/4″ to 4″ … Almost even with rock to 1/8″
3. ON THE WAY … Answers vary from rocks containing small spots to fairly large streaks.. Staining is found in a lot of rocks along the trail, including at the Outcrops waypoint.
4. AT THE TOP … a. NORTH wind and water … b. SOUTH Newfoundland Gap 5046′ vs 6643′ … c. EAST Mt. Mitchell, highest point east of the Mississippi / All are within the 6000+ elevation … d. WEST Thunderhead Mountain @ 5527′ is 1116′ lower in elevation than the Dome. We did see mostly vegetation. However, using the viewing scopes, we did see some of the gray rock characteristic of Thunderhead sandstone.

2. The predominant minerals are quartz and feldspar. There appears to be more quartz on the south side. Surface mica appears to be absent both front and back.
3a. The crevices are not as distinct. Does not look like a frog when viewed traveling north.

1. Order 5 4 3 2 1 6 … The stone in photos 1 & 2 is Mount Airy granite. The material in the third photo is some type of man-made material such as terrazzo or pre-cast concrete. The paving in photo 4, also, seems to be a type of concrete or man-made paver. The cobblestones in photo 5 and the block in photo 6 are made of Mount Airy granite.

I believe the stone in photos 1 & 2 is probably Mount Airy granite. Looks like they may be a little dirty or stained. The material in the third photo is some type of man-made material such as terrazzo or pre-cast concrete. The paving in photo 4, also, seems to be a type of concrete or man-made paver. The cobblestones in photo 5 are made of Mount Airy granite. Photo 6 is very blurry, but I would guess it is also some type of concrete or man-made material.
